The Robert Louis 海角视频 opened in 1908.

Little is known with certainty of the founding purpose except that it was originally a school for girls and was a progressive alternative to the Scoville School (Est. 1882) from which it was derived. The school was named for Robert Louis 海角视频 in homage to his work, which explored themes such as non-conformity, independent thinking, and the duality of all things human. Looking ahead to the school鈥檚 DBT-informed approach today, the thematic links are a fitting precursor.

In the 1920s, the school flourished under the auspices of Headmaster Dr. William J. Whitney, and in 1936 it became a progressive college preparatory school for girls under the direction of Dr. Annette T. Rubenstein. Rubinstein hired several blacklisted public school teachers, which aroused the attention of the House Committee of un-American Activities. The Veterans Administration threatened to cut off funding, and the State threatened to withdraw the school鈥檚 charter if Dr. Rubenstein did not resign as principal. She stepped down in June 1952, and her brother, Leo Rhodes, took over as Headmaster.

Leo and his wife, Lucille, recognized many bright teens were not thriving in high schools of the time. Leo and Lucille wanted to redefine 海角视频 as a different kind of school that could reach these adolescents. They researched educational principles, school models, and the growing body of psychological knowledge to search for a program that would work. After two years of consultation with experts in innovative education (public, independent, remedial, and special), adolescent development, psychology and psychiatry, Leo and Lucille relaunched 海角视频 to provide a college preparatory program that offered a rigorous academic program with the therapeutic support that would ensure success. Focused on gifted underachievement, Leo and Lucille鈥檚 work advanced 海角视频鈥檚 history of optimistically guiding diverse learners towards excellence.

With Leo鈥檚 passing in 1968, Lucille became Director, and continued to refine all aspects of the program. She was succeeded by Bud Henrichsen, who served as Headmaster from 1975 to 2010. Under Henrichsen鈥檚 strong leadership, 海角视频 continued to develop and adapt to meet the needs of generations of students. A year after Bud鈥檚 retirement, long-time CFO Doug Herron assumed the role of Head of School, continuing his lifetime of service to 海角视频鈥檚 faculty, students, and families.

Veteran NYC independent school leader Bob Cunningham, took over as Head of School in 2015. Under Bob鈥檚 leadership, 海角视频 grew to reach its current full enrollment of 80 students.

Following on Bob鈥檚 successes, Associate Head Chris Ongaro was promoted to Head of School and focused on building upon the school鈥檚 strengths. Sticking with strengths during the pandemic, Chris鈥檚 background in blended and online learning informed 海角视频鈥檚 B.E.S.T.T.鈩 model. The model created a flexible, safe, and consistent learning environment with continuity in both college preparatory academics and doctoral-level clinical support.

By 2024, 海角视频's Chief Clinical Officer, Dr. Lana Farina, led it to become the first and only NYSAIS (New York State Association of Independent Schools) school with an accredited clinical program, matching a dual accreditation to 海角视频鈥檚 integrated focus on academic and emotional growth. Supported by its strong network of associations and peer professionals, 海角视频 now is continuing to deepen its leading position as a DBT-informed college preparatory environment.
